When Should You Add an Extra Dolly to Your Move?

Two sets of blue RVATotes moving totes roll on separate black dollies through a Richmond apartment hallway toward an elevator.

Moving is rarely one continuous trip from a single room to a waiting vehicle. You may be packing in several parts of the home, crossing a long hallway, using an elevator, or coordinating helpers who are working at different speeds. In those situations, an extra dolly can make the whole process feel more organized.

Every standard RVATotes package includes at least one dolly. For many smaller moves, that may be all you need. But if your layout or moving plan creates more than one active packing zone, adding another dolly can help keep totes moving without making everyone wait for the same piece of equipment.

You Are Packing in Multiple Rooms

Most homes are not packed one room at a time from start to finish. One person may be organizing the kitchen while someone else handles a bedroom, office, or living area. With only one dolly, helpers may need to carry totes to a central location or wait for the dolly to return.

An extra dolly gives you more flexibility. Each packing area can have a nearby place for ready-to-move totes, and helpers can transport a load when it makes sense for their part of the move. That can reduce backtracking and help everyone stay focused on the room in front of them.

Your Route Includes a Long Hallway

Long hallways can make even a simple apartment or office move feel repetitive. The distance between the packing area and the elevator, lobby, loading area, or vehicle adds up quickly over the course of the day.

A second dolly can support a smoother relay. While one load is traveling down the hallway, another can be prepared at the starting point. Once the first dolly returns, the next group of totes is ready to go. This is especially useful when several people are helping and you want to avoid having part of the team stand still.

You Need to Use an Elevator

Elevator moves have their own rhythm. You may need to wait for the elevator, share it with neighbors, or make several trips between floors. If the only dolly is inside the elevator or on another floor, packing can pause until it comes back.

With two dollies, one load can be staged near the elevator while another is being packed or unloaded. That does not remove every delay, but it can help you use each elevator trip more efficiently. Before moving day, check your building’s rules, elevator access, and reservation requirements so you can plan the route and timing.

You Have More Than One Busy Packing Zone

Some parts of a move naturally generate more activity. Kitchens, home offices, storage areas, and children’s rooms can all require extra sorting and repeated trips. If two of those areas are active at the same time, a single dolly can become the shared resource everyone is waiting for.

Adding another dolly lets you create separate workflows. One can stay near a busy room while the other handles transport. This can be helpful when family members, friends, or professional movers are working in different areas and need to keep their tasks moving independently.

You Want to Separate Packing From Unloading

An extra dolly can also help when packing, transport, and unloading overlap. One dolly can remain near the packing area as totes are filled, while the other is used to move a completed load. At the destination, one can support unloading while the next load is being prepared.

This approach can be especially practical when you have a clear team plan. Assigning a dolly to each side of the workflow helps everyone know what is ready to move and what still needs attention. The goal is not to rush; it is to reduce unnecessary pauses and repeated handling.

How Many Dollies Come With RVATotes Packages?

The number of included dollies depends on the package you select. The Studio, 1-Bedroom, and 2-Bedroom packages each include one dolly. The 3-Bedroom and 4-Bedroom packages each include two dollies.

If your package includes one but your layout would work better with two, you can add an extra dolly for $30. Think about the actual path your totes will travel, the number of people helping, and whether more than one area will be active at a time. A compact move with a short route may not need an add-on, while a smaller apartment with a long hallway and elevator may benefit from one.

Make the Dolly Work for Your Move

Before moving day, clear the route between your packing areas and the exit. Remove loose rugs, cords, and small objects that could interrupt the path. Keep each tote centered on the dolly, move at a controlled pace, and use stable, level surfaces whenever possible. If your building has tight corners or doorways, walk the route first so you know where extra care is needed.

It also helps to decide where full totes will wait and where empty totes will be placed. A simple staging plan prevents bottlenecks and keeps walkways open. If you are using two dollies, give each one a purpose based on your space rather than moving both randomly from room to room.

Choose the Setup That Fits Your Move

An extra dolly is most useful when it solves a specific challenge: multiple rooms, a long hallway, an elevator, separate packing zones, or overlapping packing and unloading. By looking at your route and workflow ahead of time, you can choose a setup that helps your moving day run more smoothly.
